As a matter of fact, aFe’s kit is one of the most effective ones. In real-world tests, it has proven to be incredibly efficient. When compared to the factory filtration system, the Magnum outflows it by up to 97%, which is quite a lot. The housing, in turn, is protected by powder coating for extra durability.
It keeps the unwanted engine heat out and is very quick to mount. The filter also deserves our praise. Crafted from polyurethane, it lasts for many years, if not decades. Yes, it’s cleanable and reusable and does an excellent job at keeping all the contaminants from damaging the engine. Add a heat-insulating, roto-molded tube, and you’ll get yourself a safe bet.
Sadly, the installation process might not go as smoothly as you’d expect. Mostly, this has to do with the air sensor. Depending on your TJ’s make, model year, and engine, you’ll probably have to cut a new hole for it. The rubber gasket will have to be replaced too, by the way.

I know I just said that the filter is huge, but it won’t cost any inconveniences during the installation. The whole thing will go smoothly if you follow the instructions. Owners of the legendary TJ with the 4.0-lit engine will probably find this air intake to be the best offer on the table. Designed and produced by RedRock, it will be a perfect fit for this legendary Jeep. Even if you’ve never been around aftermarket gear, the installation won’t cause you any trouble. You’ll be done in 30 minutes tops without breaking a sweat. The package includes all the necessary hardware, too.
I’m talking about nuts, bolts, couplers, and zip ties – everything needed for the installation. Unfortunately, the overall construction quality is average at best. RedRock’s engineers didn’t use any premium materials for this air kit; they’re still decent, but not top-quality. But, that’s well compensated by the low price. It’s safe to say that this is one of the cheapest aftermarket cold air intakes for the TJ.
So, it’s up to you to decide whether you’re ready to compromise on the engineering a bit for the below-average price-tag, or not.

Mostly, it greatly improves the Jeep’s towing and up-hill performance. If you do a lot of hauling on a daily basis, you’ll immediately feel the difference.
Even the mightiest SUVs and trucks struggle when climbing steep, rocky hills. Well, that won’t be a problem anymore. The HP and torque will get a “kick” as well, but it won’t be as impressive as with towing/climbing. On the bright side, thanks to premium engineering, this intake kit is rated as one of the most reliable and long-lasting options both for the Gladiator and the JL.

Well, it was meticulously engineered to achieve the highest possible efficiency for the Gladiator and the JL. And, since most of these vehicles are pretty new, K&N managed to maximize all the advanced gear and tech hidden under the hood. As a result, you’ll get an “all-consuming” performance boost, something that most air kits can’t provide.
The intake tube boasts an aerodynamic design and guarantees an increase in “horses” and torque. The High-flow filter, in turn, is great at shielding the motor from contaminants. Add a sleek, eye-catching design that’s easy to fit in the engine bay and looks dope with the hood popped, and you’ll see why I put this kit on the list. Now, I know I just said that 71-1576 is easy to install, and that’s very much true.
However, the air sensor will probably turn out to be something of a challenge. First of all, be very gentle with the stock sensor: don’t pull it too hard. Secondly, the new sensor may not fit perfectly – some fine-tuning will be involved. To compensate for that, K&N offers multiple finishes and coatings to pick from.

There’s very little not to like about this cold air intake. It looks great, comes in different finishes and coatings, and includes some of the most advanced and effective tubes and filters. And if you’ve got some mechanical skills, the installation won’t be a problem either.
4. S&B Filters 75-5121 Cold Air Intake
Last, but not least, we’ve got a lovely intake kit by S&B. The fans of premium Jeep gear probably already know that this company can be trusted. One of this kit’s biggest selling points – it avoids the annoying Check Engine light. No tuning, programming, calibration, or any of that will be necessary. Just remove the old filtration system, install 75-5121, and that’s it.
Sadly, the package doesn’t come with any zip ties, which makes it harder to secure the hoses. Yet, that’s pretty much the only downside to this otherwise excellent product. What I really like about it is the exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures and the tear strength. Essentially, that means reliability, durability, and a longer lifespan for your engine.
And one more thing: S&B’s cold air intake is street legal across the US. On top of that, delivery + shipment take very little time.

Cold air intake kits – what are they all about? What sets a good kit from a bad one? And what are the most defining factors that can make it or break it for a cold air intake? For an off-roading enthusiast who is learning about it all for the first time, it can be quite a challenge to figure out what’s what. That’s exactly why I decided to write this guide: to help you make sense of everything and to learn about the most important aspects of a premium intake system.
Engineering, Build Quality, and Materials
Essentially, an air intake system consists of three parts: the intake tube, the filter, and housing. The tube should be crafted from high-quality aluminum. Also, look for a free-flowing, mandrel-bent, and roto-molded design for maximum efficiency. The best filters have a conical shape and are usually larger than the factory units. A five-layer cotton-gauze media filter will be able to defend the engine from the nastiest contaminants.
Finally, one-piece housing is the way to go here. It would be best if it had natural protection against heat and powder coating to keep rust and corrosion at bay. A quick note: if you see “dyno-tested” in the specs, that means the filter was tested multiple times in real-world situations and has proven its worth.
Cooling Efficiency and Performance Boost
The most important thing for any aftermarket air kit is to be efficient. Some brands declare their intake systems are 25% better than the stock gear; others go with double efficiency claims. Filters: Dry vs. Oiled
As you’ve probably already learned, the best air intake kits come packed with filters. So, what do they do for you, exactly? It’s not that complicated, really: air filters have only one task, and that is to keep the engine free from whatever the road has in stores. I’m talking about tiny rocks, pieces of wood (debris), allergens, pollen, dust, and more. Filters serve as a line of defense that keeps all that stuff from damaging the engine.
Without proper protection, the motor will be overwhelmed by it all and give up on you a lot sooner than it normally would have. Now, there are two different types of filters – dry and oiled. Dry filters are cheaper, easier to install, and don’t affect performance in any way. Sadly, they have a pretty low life cycle (15-20K miles, depending on the area and how dusty and sandy it is).
On the bright side, if you perform routine maintenance checks (like every 5 thousand miles, or so), you’ll be able to extend the lifespan to 30-35K miles. The best way to do that is to use compressed air to blow out the filter. But, once the life cycle is over, the dry filter will have to be replaced. In contrast, oiled filters don’t need to be replaced. That’s right: if you regularly change/refresh the oil, an oiled filter will be almost as good as new.
Cleaning oiled filters is very easy, especially if you have a hose. And, they can last for up to 80-100K miles. On the downside, they’re more expensive than their dry counterparts and have a minor negative effect on engine performance.
Compatibility and Ease of Installation
How do I know that the air kit is going to fit my Jeep? That’s one of the most popular questions online. The good news is – there are some tried-and-true ways to ensure compatibility. First of all, check the specs. If you’re buying at an “offline” store, you’ll see the information on the tag. Or, better yet, have one of the staff members help you with the choice. And what about online shopping, you might ask?
The same rules apply: find the specifications and check for compatibility. Most online stores have a compatibility chart where you can choose your vehicle and see whether it is gonna be a “pair made in heaven” with the intake kit, or not. And be specific about it. Different cold air intake systems fit different nameplates, makes, model years, engines, and even wheelbases. So, don’t rush yourself and make sure you’ve got all the info right.
Some folks that are new to Jeep customization are confident they’ll be able to install pretty much any aftermarket gear, but that’s far from the truth. Unless it’s a perfect match, you’ll have to do a lot of cutting, drill in new holes, and waste lots of time, energy, and (potentially) money on new bolts, screws, and couplers to make it work. That’s why it’s always better to buy a kit that was initially designed with your vehicle in mind.
That way, the installation process will be very smooth and straightforward and won’t take more than a couple of hours at a slow pace. Speaking of bolts and screws, make a habit of checking the package: it should include all the necessary installation hardware.

The warranty does affect the final price, though.
